The DMS Men’s Ensemble is a non-auditioned boys chamber chorus comprised of boys in grades six through eight. This group began as a recruitment strategy for boys into the choral program and has grown into a talented and energetic ensemble for boys who enjoy singing, making music together, and sharing the camaraderie, theatricality, and comfort of experimenting with their voices as they change! This ensemble, which has a range of anywhere between 20 to 35 boys year to year, allows these boys to experience singing in an environment that allows them to take risks safely, to have equal time to be boys as to be professional young men, and to experience the right balance of structured discipline and independent discovery. The group meets once a week on Friday mornings, with additional rehearsals added frequently. Boys in this group are heavily involved in outside activities including sports, private lessons, drama, student leadership council, and advanced academic studies. Many of the boys have participated in the D300 Choral Festival and the IMEA District IX Junior Chorus, while many other boys have had no previous ensemble singing experience. Under the direction of Mona Roy, The Men’s Ensemble of Dundee Middle School has continually received recognition and top ratings in contests and festivals in the last 4 years. The group has consecutively received a Division I rating in Illinois Grade School Music Association choral organizational contests at both the district and state level. In addition, they have performed at the VanderCook College of Music Choral Festival and the Barnes n’ Noble Book Fair. This group allows the choral program to pay close attention to the unique needs of our male singers. We work not just to keep them involved in singing through their voice change, but also create an environment that allows them to thrive, musically and socially, well into their high school years and beyond.
